Gear Up Encourage's Attendance in our Schools

Partnering with Magoffin County Schools, the Gear Up Program encourages students to attend school daily.  Here are the winners of this month's attendance drawing, winning T-Shirts from Friday's Motivational Speaker, Clay Dyer.

North and South LMS Training

As part of a professional development opportunity North Magoffin’s LMS Mrs. Tackett and South Magoffin’s  LMS  Christy Ward attended the LMS Spring Fling held at Frankfort, Kentucky. This training featured Black Lagoon Author Mike Thaler, Amy Cox presenting Common Core 101 for Library Media Specialists, David Burrow presenting ebooks, Ipads and other technology that could be used in a library.

North Magoffin 4th Grade Students Participate in the Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program

The 4th grade students at North Magoffin Elementary participated in the 2013-2014 Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program. As part of this grant students received a field trip to the Kentucky Horse Park.

Kentucky Dataseam Recognizes HWMS Student Work

Ms. Jessica Francis' reading class students have created "How To" podcasts to help others. The students used the new MacBook portable computer lab to complete their projects. Kentucky Dataseam was impressed with the students' work so they sent every student who completed the project a tee shirt.

Students in Mrs. Theresa Miller's second grade class at Salyersville Grade School have passed 3000 AR tests!! Pictured above is a student taking the 3000th test.  She has passed over 200 tests.

HWMS Spring Dance Royalty
We will be voting for Spring Dance King & Queen (8th Grade) as well as Prince & Princess (7th Grade) on Friday, April 25th during homeroom. Good luck to all of our nominees! Students MUST attend the dance to win; if they aren't there, then it will be given to second place.

Head Start Pre-Registration


Magoffin County Head Start will be taking applications from 8:00 - 3:00  April 21st, 22nd, 23rd & 24th for the 2014-2015 school year.

Applications will be taken at the Head Start Office.

Farm Bureau has Extended the Deadline for Scholarship Applications

The date to have applications in has been extended to April 25th.  You can pick up an application at your local Farm Bureau Agent (Doug Green), or online.

7th Grade Students Enjoy National Weather Service Guests

All HWMS 7th grade students received an educational weather presentation by Shawn Harley, Meterologist In Charge, and Edward Ray, Science and Operations Officer, from the National Weather Service in Jackson, Kentucky. The students enjoyed examining various weather instruments as well as participating in some hands on experiments.
